A boiler expansion vessel accommodates the increase in water volume that occurs as the central heating system becomes hot. It helps maintain stable system pressure and protects the boiler and heating components from excessive pressure.

A faulty or depleted expansion vessel may cause boiler pressure to rise significantly when the heating is operating. The pressure may then fall again as the system cools. Other symptoms can include water discharging through the pressure relief valve or frequent boiler repressurisation.
